Most people's home wardrobe is a collection of things that didn't work out elsewhere. A few deliberate choices make it something you actually enjoy wearing every day.

Start with one good lounge set

The foundation of a home wardrobe is a single lounge set you genuinely like wearing. Not the one you bought on sale because it was cheap, and not the one you kept because it's too worn to donate. A set in a fabric you find comfortable and a colour you don't mind being seen in. Even just by the delivery person.

Brushed cotton in a neutral tone is a practical starting point. It works across seasons, washes well, and pairs with almost anything you'd layer over it.

Add a sleep set that's separate from your daywear

Wearing the same clothes to sleep in that you've worn around the house all day is a habit that makes it harder to wind down at night. A dedicated sleep set. Even a simple one. Creates a small but useful ritual around going to bed.

Satin is worth trying if you've never worn it for sleep. The smooth surface reduces friction against the skin and hair, which is why it's often recommended for people who wake up with tangled hair or sleep lines on their face.

A robe ties it together

A robe worn over a sleep set or a lounge set extends the warmth of both without requiring you to change. It's particularly useful in Japanese apartments in autumn and winter, where the gap between the heated room and the unheated hallway or bathroom can be significant.

One robe in a neutral colour works with everything. Ivory, oatmeal, or grey are the most versatile. A waffle knit robe is lighter than a terry robe and dries faster, which makes it easier to wash regularly.

What to add if you want more

Once you have a lounge set, a sleep set, and a robe, the next useful addition is a set of ribbed separates you can mix with the pieces you already have. A ribbed top pairs well with the trousers from a lounge set. A ribbed wide-leg pant works under a robe.

Beyond that, accessories. A sleep mask, an eye pillow. Are small additions that make the existing pieces feel more considered. They're also the easiest things to give or receive as gifts.

A home wardrobe doesn't need to be large. It needs to have the right things in it. Three or four pieces chosen deliberately will serve you better than a drawer full of things you tolerate.
